10 (or Maybe 11) Films to See in July
Amid the usual summer blockbusters—including a return to the Bourne franchise for Matt Damon and a family adventure from Steven Spielberg—the month ahead will also feature intriguing smaller films that have already made an impression on the festival circuit over the past year. We've picked out a handful of July's best bets below—as well as one major wildcard.
The first trailer for Paul Feig’s gender-reverse remake of beloved 1980s comedy classic Ghostbusters confused some people (even star Melissa McCarthy) and enraged enough haters with time on their hands to make it the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. The release of a second, much less confusing trailer quelled some of the uproar.
But even after a media blitz that included a meeting of the original and current Ghostbusters casts on Jimmy Kimmel Live, there’s no guarantee viewers will embrace McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as they did Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson in 1984. Hopefully, Murray’s remarks on the movie prove prophetic: “You’ll delight in the film. It sort of rumbles along in the beginning. You’re going oh god are they gonna pull this thing off.... But there is no quit in these girls.”
