Drama series debuts January 12 on Netflix
Accomplished Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda, best known for his Cannes-winning film Shoplifters (and whose most recent film, Broker, just opened in American theaters) detours into television for his first Netflix series. The Makanai is also the first live-action adaptation of the award-winning manga series Kiyo in Kyoto and, like the comics, will focus on a young woman who becomes a Makanai—one who cooks meals for a house shared by apprentice geishas (or Maiko). Kore-eda directs multiple episodes in addition to serving as writer and showrunner on the series.
