Lukas Dhont’s debut feature, Girl, won the Camera d’Or (Best First Feature) at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. That film’s release was mired in controversy over its portrayal of a young trans woman by a cisgender boy and its shocking ending. His latest, the heart-wrenching story of the dissolution of a friendship between two 13-year-old boys, Léo (Eden Dambrine) and Rémi (Gustav De Waele), impressed the 2022 Cannes Film Festival jury enough to share the Grand Prix (2nd Place) with Claire Denis’ Stars at Noon, but it wasn’t without controversy as well. This Belgium film is one of the favorites to be one of the five nominees for this year’s Best International Feature Oscar and, currently sits fourth on our 2022 Film Awards and Nominations Scorecard.
