Opens in theaters January 20
In 2021, writer-director Aleem Khan’s debut feature took home five British Independent Film Awards (a feat passed just this year when Aftersun took home six) and one BAFTA for lead actress Joanna Scanlan. She plays Mary Hussain, who converted to Islam when she married and now, as a widow in her late 60s, discovers that her late husband had a secret family. Compelled to find out more, she crosses the English Channel to Calais and finds Nathalie Richard’s Genevieve. In the words of Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw, “After Love has the agony of a domestic tragedy and the tension of a Hitchcock thriller.”
