New series debuts January 24 on HBO and HBO Max
Looking for a replacement for Downton Abbey? HBO's new costume drama is set in a slightly different time period (the 1880s) and a very different country (America) but comes from Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and will similarly focus on socioeconomic differences while offering a window into the world of the moneyed class. Originally developed for NBC nearly a full decade ago and actually ordered to series at that network in 2018 before moving to cable, the nine-episode Gilded Age follows a young woman who moves from Pennsylvania farmland to New York City to live with her wealthy aunts following the death of her father. Louisa Jacobson (Meryl Streep's third daughter to take up acting, here making her TV debut), Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, Taissa Farmiga, Denée Benton, Jack Gilpin, Simon Jones, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Audra McDonald, Nathan Lane, and Harry Richardson are just some of the names in the huge ensemble cast, while Downton Abbey veteran Michael Engler directs the bulk of the series.
