19 Films to See in February
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – February 1, 2023
In the gallery on this page, our editors have selected the most interesting films debuting in North American theaters this month, listed in alphabetical order.
TITANIC: Celebrating its 25th anniversary (plus a few months, but who's counting?) is James Cameron's massive, Best Picture-winning 1997 blockbuster Titanic (pictured above), which returns to theaters on February 10. Disney had success with a re-release of the director's Avatar last fall—which, along with its new Cameron-directed sequel and Titanic, account for three of the five highest-grossing films of all time—and Titanic heads back to the screen newly remastered in high-frame-rate 4K digital 3D, which will provide a different viewing experience that what you are used to. (The film was definitely not in 3D back in 1997, though the extra dimension was previously added for a 2012 re-release.) Watch trailer
CROUCHING TIGER: Also returning to theaters this month is 2000's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Feb. 17), one of the most crtitically acclaimed (and financially successful) wuxia movies ever made—in fact, one of the most acclaimed movies of any genre. Directed by Ang Lee, the fantastical, 19th century story stars Chow Yun-Fat, Zhang Ziyi, and current Oscar nominee Michelle Yeoh, and features memorable fight choreography from Yuen Woo-ping. The Oscar winner has been newly remastered in 4K but doesn't have any other new bells and whistles like Titanic, but the beautifully shot film is a must-see on the big screen if you've never had the opportunity before.
