10 Films to See in February
While January (as is the norm) had little of quality to offer moviegoers other than holdovers from the previous year, February looks a lot more promising. This month will see the arrival of a new comedy from the Coen brothers, a thriller from John Hillcoat, several foreign dramas that have already collected raves from reviewers, and what could be 2016's best horror film.
Stephan James (Selma) stars as Jesse Owens in this biopic about the legendary track and field athlete who faced off against Hitler’s dreams of Aryan superiority at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Directed by Stephen Hopkins (Lost in Space, The Reaping), the aptly titled film explores not only Owens’ skills on the track but also his ability to handle the pressures of being a black athlete in the 1930s. Expect this film to be added to the media’s discussion of race in Hollywood, and, if it’s good, look for awards speculation to begin.
