10 Films to See in February
While January (as is the norm) had little of quality to offer moviegoers other than holdovers from the previous year, February looks a lot more promising. This month will see the arrival of a new comedy from the Coen brothers, a thriller from John Hillcoat, several foreign dramas that have already collected raves from reviewers, and what could be 2016's best horror film.
In 2013, Jia Zhang-ke won an award at Cannes for his screenplay to A Touch of Sin. Last year, he returned to Cannes with this three-part drama that looks at China’s past (1999), present (2014) and future (2025). Like Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, each time period has a different aspect ratio, progressing from Academy ratio to widescreen and then to Cinemascope. In 1999, childhood friends Liangzi and Zhang are both in love with Tao, the town beauty. Tao eventually decides to marry the wealthier Zhang. They soon have a son and Zhang names him Dollar. In 2014 they are separated, and, in 2025, Dollar is in Australia, where the English dialogue became a sticking point for some critics. Still, this is another ambitious work from the consistently praised director.
