10 Films to See in February
While January (as is the norm) had little of quality to offer moviegoers other than holdovers from the previous year, February looks a lot more promising. This month will see the arrival of a new comedy from the Coen brothers, a thriller from John Hillcoat, several foreign dramas that have already collected raves from reviewers, and what could be 2016's best horror film.
After premiering at Cannes’ 47th Directors’ Fortnight, where it won the top Art Cinema Award, Ciro Guerra’s third feature has gone on to earn an Academy Award nomination for best foreign language film, and just this last week it picked up The Sundance Film Festival’s Alfred P. Sloan Prize. The black-and-white drama centers on the Amazonian shaman Karamakate—the last of his tribe—and two scientists who visit him: Theodor Koch-Grünberg in 1909, and Richard Evans Schultes over 30 years later.
