Which of These New Fall TV Shows Will Fail First?
If there is anything we can guarantee about the fall TV season, it's that at least one of the highly promoted network newcomers will fail to catch on with audiences and meet a premature end. Heck, it happens every year.
But which freshman series will be this year's This Is Us, and which will be its Conviction? Below, we have picked out some of the pros and cons facing each of the new broadcast series debuting between September and November
Pros: The early word from some critics suggests that this comedy—about an aspiring rapper who runs for mayor of a California town just for the publicity, only to find himself winning the election—could be one of the fall's most original and charming newcomers despite hitting classic sitcom tropes. There's already good buzz about lead Brandon Micheal Hall and the supporting cast (Yvette Nicole Brown, Lea Michele), and the show will feature original music by Hamilton's Daveed Diggs (who is one of The Mayor's producers).
Cons: Given the current political climate, a story about an unqualified political novice from the world of entertainment who surprisingly finds himself elected to office may not quite be the feel-good story it would normally be in just about any other year. The show is also in a brutal timeslot, with strong competition for viewers among shows with heart (This Is Us), edgy/goofy comedy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and whatever it is that Bull provides (Bull).
