Which of These New Fall TV Shows Will Fail First?
It will happen. At some point this fall, one of the broadcast networks will be the first to pull the plug on one of its once-promising but now ratings-challenged new shows.
But predicting which show will be the first to go is tough. As we've seen in the past, the first-canceled program isn't necessarily the worst show of the fall—on occasion, it is even one of the best. But to help you get a feel for the prospects of this year's newcomers, we have identified some of the pros and cons of each of the 20 new broadcast series debuting this month and next.
Pros: Kevin James' previous CBS sitcom ran for nine seasons despite middling reviews. And the show currently has The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in, which can't hurt. CBS will almost certainly wait until after October 24 (when Kevin Can Wait is scheduled to shift to 8p) to make any long-term decisions on the show's future. Last night's premiere ratings match those of the debut of Life in Pieces one year ago in the same timeslot, and that show ultimately earned a second season renewal.
Cons: Critics sure don't like the show, and it's about as generic as a sitcom can get. Then again, CBS renewed its lowest-scoring series last season, so reviews probably don't matter to the network's decision makers.
