Which of These New Fall TV Shows Will Fail First?
It will happen. At some point this fall, one of the broadcast networks will be the first to pull the plug on one of its once-promising but now ratings-challenged new shows.
But predicting which show will be the first to go is tough. As we've seen in the past, the first-canceled program isn't necessarily the worst show of the fall—on occasion, it is even one of the best. But to help you get a feel for the prospects of this year's newcomers, we have identified some of the pros and cons of each of the 20 new broadcast series debuting this month and next.
Pros: Every network but CBS will introduce a time travel series this season, but NBC's will be first to air (in our present timeline, at least). And this one has some big names involved, including producers Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), plus director Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones). This is another NBC newcomer that will benefit from having The Voice as its lead-in. Only 13 episodes were ordered, and NBC is unlikely to want to launch its midseason replacement (Taken) early, so Timeless could be given time to play out. Many critics seem to be encouraged by the pilot, though not all are fully convinced it will be a successful series.
Cons: Convoluted time-travel stories are tough to jump into mid-stream, so Timeless will need to grab viewers immediately.
