Which of These New Fall TV Shows Will Fail First?
It will happen. At some point this fall, one of the broadcast networks will be the first to pull the plug on one of its once-promising but now ratings-challenged new shows.
But predicting which show will be the first to go is tough. As we've seen in the past, the first-canceled program isn't necessarily the worst show of the fall—on occasion, it is even one of the best. But to help you get a feel for the prospects of this year's newcomers, we have identified some of the pros and cons of each of the 20 new broadcast series debuting this month and next.
Pros: Creator Jason Katims managed to keep each of his past four shows (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, About a Boy, and Hulu's The Path) on the air for at least two seasons. This one's the last network series to launch this fall, and it's a procedural—a genre that CBS loves. (Think of it as House with even more gadgetry, or a medical Scorpion.)
Cons: It has been a struggle to get the series on the air—CBS passed on the series in 2015 before trying again this year—and the early buzz is that it's inferior to Katims' past work. Genius also faces tough competition in the form of The Blacklist and How to Get Away With Murder, and CBS would presumably have less patience with a failing show in such a high-profile timeslot.
