Austrian writer-director Marie Kreutzer’s follow-up to the well-regarded The Ground Beneath My Feet is an unconventional biopic of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Titled for the mercilessly cinched bodice around her torso, the film stars Phantom Thread’s Vicky Krieps as the affectionately nicknamed Sissi, whose full list of titles included Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie of Bavaria, Empress of Austria, and Queen of Hungary. Earning comparisons to The Favourite and Marie Antoinette, this subversive look at a fascinating life focuses on Elisabeth around her 40th birthday in 1877 as she strains against the strictures of her place in the court with her husband Emperor Franz Joseph I, whom she married at 16. Krieps won Best Performance in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
