Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda will return to Japan for his upcoming 2023 feature film Monster (as well as the January Netflix series The Makanai). But since winning the Palme d’Or in 2018 for Shoplifters, he’s made a film in France (The Truth) and now this one in Korea. Parasite's Song Kang Ho stars as a struggling Busan laundromat owner who turns to being a baby broker to payoff local gangsters. He and his partner take babies from a church baby box (a place where a mother can surrender her baby for adoption) and try to sell the infant to a suitable family. When one of the mothers returns and the cops start following them, their lives get complicated. It’s another heartwarming tale from the director—maybe not among his best, but another gentle tale buoyed by a strong ensemble.
