Working from Nobel and Booker Prize–winning author Kazuo Ishiguro’s screenplay, director Oliver Hermanus (Moffie) moves Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, Ikiru, to post-war London, and casts Bill Nighy (in fine form as usual) in the role of Williams, a widower and civil servant in the rebuilding of Britain post-WWII. When he is diagnosed with a terminal illness, Williams, inspired by a former coworker (Aimee Lou Wood), tries to bring meaning to his remaining days by salvaging a modest project from bureaucratic purgatory. For a majority of critics, it’s the rare remake well worth seeing.
