Documentary debuts December 2 on HBO and HBO Max
Don't hit that "Next Slide" button just yet. Out of all of HBO's "Music Box" documentaries, you may think this is the one you'll want to skip. But you are wrong. The recipient of excellent reviews out of TIFF in September, Penny Lane's highly entertaining documentary knows that that the smooth jazz saxophonist (who participates in the film) is hated by as many (or more) music fans than those who adore him and buy his records by the millions. And her painstakingly researched, often humorous film doesn't just trace his life story but focuses a good chunk of time on the backlash while exploring the meaning of "good" and "bad" music through interviews with music critics, DJs, and scholars.
The Music Box series continues on December 9 with Mr. Saturday Night, a profile of Australian businessman, artist manager, and producer named Robert Stigwood, the driving force behind the movie (and legendary soundtrack album) Saturday Night Fever. Then, on December 16, Juice WRLD: Into the Abyss takes a look at the life of the late rapper.
