Also opening in theaters on December 17 following a widely praised debut on the fall festival circuit, Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut is an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante (the Italian author best known for My Brilliant Friend). Olivia Colman stars as a woman whose solo summer seaside vacation turns sour when she becomes obsessed with another family whose activities trigger unhappy memories of her own past as a young mother. Gyllenhaal also wrote the script and enlisted a strong cast that also includes Dakota Johnson, Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, and Peter Sarsgaard.
