New series debuts December 16 on Peacock
Will Forte's MacGyver spoof, which originated first as a sketch on Saturday Night Live and made the jump to the big screen in a 2010 cult classic movie, returns now as a Peacock original series that picks up in the present day. Forte's title character has been in jail for the past decade serving a life sentence but is suddenly released as the series begins in order to participate in a secret government mission to take down an enemy from MacGruber's past, played by Billy Zane. Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Timothy V. Murphy also reprise their roles from the film, while new faces include Sam Elliott (as MacGruber's father) and Laurence Fishburne. Like the movie, the series is written by Forte along with John Solomon and Jorma Taccone, while the latter returns as director.
