Movie debuts December 1 on Netflix
It could be Netflix's best chance at Oscar glory to date. For her first film in 12 years, Jane Campion (The Piano, Bright Star) writes and directs an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Savage that chronicles a rift between two wealthy Montana rancher brothers in the 1920s after one of them sneaks off to get married. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, and Keith Carradine head the strong cast. Thanks to a strong showing in competition at Venice earlier this fall (where the film received glowing reviews), Dog is currently regarded as this year's Oscar best picture favorite and could wind up accumulating quite a few awards over the coming months—including for Campion, who was just the second woman ever nominated for a directing Oscar (nearly three decades ago) but has yet to win.
