László Nemes’ debut feature stunned many observers at this year's Cannes festival, where it won the Grand Prix (second place). With formal rigor, the film follows Saul Ausländer (Géza Röhrig), a Hungarian member of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s Sonderkommando, a group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of extermination. Hungary’s official Oscar submission should be one of the favorites at this year’s Academy Awards.
