A moment ago, we called David Ayer's poorly received 2016 film Suicide Squad a riff on a bad-guy Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, for this 2021 sequel/reboot, DC and Warner Bros. enlisted actual Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, and the result was a massive improvement. IndieWire's David Ehrlich called the new take, which added Idris Elba and John Cena alongside returning stars Margot Robbie and Joel Kinnaman, "The most fun and least depressing superhero movie in a very long time."
