Though it divided critics, Todd Phillips' 2019 film did something no other comic book film (DC or otherwise) did before it: receive 11 Oscar nominations. Heavily influenced by the work of Martin Scorsese, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular villain, here getting the spotlight in an origin story depicting his origin story as a failed stand-up comic turned criminal.
