The 20 Best Video Games of 2022 So Far
Which games impressed professional reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed videogames released between January 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022 by Metascore. Games must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion.
Note that ...
If a game was released on multiple platforms, we included only the version receiving the largest total number of reviews (usually, but not always, the PS5 or PS4 version).
Multi-game compilations and newly released ports of games released in prior years on other platforms are excluded, unless they are substantially different from the prior release(s) (for example, an HD remaster of a previous-gen game that also adds some new content). We have also excluded DLC.
The first sequel to Guerrilla Games' hit 2017 open-world action-RPG game Horizon Zero Dawn is another PlayStation exclusive and another hit with critics and gamers alike. The setting is once again a future, post-apocalyptic western United States that is filled with dangerous mechanical creatures, with many new to this game. And once again you'll play as the low-tech huntress Aloy (again voiced by Ashly Burch) as you venture through a wide variety of biomes across the west, which now appears to be plagued by a strange red blight and weather anomalies. Locations stretch from Utah to the remains of San Francisco and include an explorable underwater area (with Aloy now able to swim beneath the surface). The voice cast also includes Angela Bassett (playing a new warrior character named Regalla), Lance Reddick, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
“Horizon Forbidden West pulls players along on a breathtaking journey – one so lifelike and human it’s almost unbelievable just how good it really is.” —GamesHub
