Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
If your leftover Halloween candy pile is down to a few stray pieces of Laffy Taffy* and Tootsie Rolls, it can mean only one thing: It's time for film awards season!
Which films will contend for the Oscars' biggest prize in March? To find out, we have surveyed industry experts, calculated the Metascores, and examined the top performing films at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 15 potential best picture contenders from 2022, plus more than a dozen bonus wildcards. In a welcome change, this year's best picture slate could include multiple films that you've heard of—in fact, it could include some of the year's most successful films at the box office. So let the guessing game begin ...
* Please take our Laffy Taffy.
What is it? The first sequel to one of Marvel's most critically and commercially successful films, 2018's Black Panther.
Why is it a contender? The previous Black Panther film was the first comic book movie in history to receive a best picture nomination. The sequel returns director and co-writer Ryan Coogler, and though it had to pivot away from a storyline involving its title character following the death of star Chadwick Boseman, it still features an excellent cast led now by Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, and Danai Gurira.
What are its chances? Since Black Panther, only one additional comic book movie (Joker) has received a best picture nomination, and last year's well-reviewed box office smash Spider-Man: No Way Home was virtually ignored by the Academy. But if Wakanda Forever is able to match the critical and commercial success of its predecessor, it's fair to expect another best picture nomination.
When can I see it? November 11, in theaters everywhere.
