The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2018
Above are the highest-scoring first-year TV series debuting in the United States between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. Shows are ranked by Metascore (an average of grades from top professional critics on a 0-100 scale) prior to rounding, and any programs with fewer than 7 reviews are excluded. (Note that limited series, as well as TV movies and specials, will be ranked in a separate list arriving this weekend.)
A co-production between HBO and the UK's Sky Atlantic, this under-the-radar, seven-episode dark comedy series is written, produced, and directed by Julia Davis (creator of the superior UK version of Camping), who also stars as a would-be actress and singer who seduces the titular Sally (Catherine Shepherd), an office worker who has been mired in a decade-long relationship with a rather dull man. The comedy veers from witty to raunchy and cringe-inducing, and the critics who like the series (there are many) seem to love it. At the very least, it has some of the most memorable sex scenes in television history.
“Potentially cataclysmic. I’m not certain U.S. viewers are--or will ever be--ready.” —Sophie Gilbert, The Atlantic
