and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – July 1, 2023
Which films impressed critics during the first half of the year? In the gallery on this page we rank the highest-scoring movies debuting in theaters (or straight to VOD/streaming) between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023. Titles are ranked by their Metascores as of June 30, 2023 and must have a minimum of 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion.
(#11) One of the most accessible films in the already impressive filmography of director Kelly Reichardt—and probably the closest thing to a comedy in the bunch—Showing Up re-teams the filmmaker with her frequent star Michelle Williams for a low-key character study about a Portland, Oregon sculptor who attempts to handle the various stresses of her art career, her day job, an occasionally contentious relationship with her landlord/neighbor (Hong Chau), and her family relationships. Judd Hirsch and André 3000 also star in the dramedy, which was co-written (like several previous Reichardt films) by novelist Jon Raymond.
Showing Up is available to purchase from digital services and may still be found in theaters in some markets.
“This beautifully acted, expertly modulated film is a work of such enveloping gentleness that even the worst crises are simply absorbed into the fabric of life and work. While the ending might have been corny in a less subtle director’s hands, here it’s quietly restorative. We don’t deserve Kelly Reichardt.” —David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
