The highest-scoring most sedate film of Argentine director Gaspar Noé's up-and-down career to date, Vortex is a drama inspired by the director's own near-death experience and personal losses. Presented entirely in split-screen—Noé had two cameras running to capture multiple characters simultaneously—the film focuses on an elderly Parisian couple (played by Françoise Lebrun and, in his first leading acting role, Italian director Dario Argento) dealing with the ravages of aging and dementia, and the troubled son (Alex Lutz) who attempts to aid them while battling his own demons. Many critics praised the filmmaker's change-of-pace film as a surprisingly devastating accomplishment when it was first unveiled at Cannes last year.
“There’s a despairing inevitability to the film’s incremental pacing – we feel every aching minute of the nearly two-and-a-half-hour running time. It’s not exactly fun, but it’s a relentlessly powerful piece of film-making.” —Wendy Ide, The Observer
