Teaming with co-director Paul Sng, filmmaker Celeste Bell traces the life and legacy of her own mother, Marianne Joan Elliott-Said. That name may not ring any bells, but punk fans of a certain age will recognize her stage name: Poly Styrene, the frontwoman for the English band X-Ray Spex, who made quite a mark with their one and only album (1978's Germfree Adolescents). Narration from both Bell and actress Ruth Negga (reading from Poly Styrene's own diaries) combines with archival footage and commentary from the likes of Thurston Moore, Kathleen Hanna, and Don Letts to create an unusually personal and multilayered music doc.
“In a genre often saturated with sugar-coated stories and selective memories, Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché proves to be anything but.” —Rachel Reeves, Consequence
