and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – July 3, 2019
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019 by Metascore. Films must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
Bob Dylan's 1975-1976 concert tour, bookending the release of his album Desire, is famed for the quality of Dylan's performances as well as its star-studded lineup, which at times included Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Roger McGuinn, among other big names. It was also, fortuitously, extraordinarily well documented with both video and audio recordings. Director Martin Scorsese uses some of the former for this Netflix feature that is part concert film, part documentary about the tour.
“Full of eye-opening musical performances, the film also sparkles with tongue-in-cheek humor, and features contemporary interviews that are often far from what they seem. You have to go back to After Hours to find a Scorsese film with a similarly mischievous wit.” —Caryn James, The Hollywood Reporter
