The 25 Best Movies Directed by Women, Ranked
With this week's release of Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, we’re looking back at the best female-helmed films of the 21st century.
From eye-opening documentaries to political thrillers and romance, a generation of women, including Bigelow, Sofia Coppola, Ava Duvernay and more, have brought viewers rarely-told stories from a unique point of view.
These are the greatest films coming from this talented crop of filmmakers, ranked by Metascore.
Bigelow's follow-up to The Hurt Locker returned to the Middle East and scored even better reviews. Jessica Chastain stars in this political thriller about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden after the September 11 attacks. Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton and James Gandolfini also appear in the film, which culminates with bin Laden’s death after a raid by Navy SEAL Team 6.
“Ms. Bigelow's direction here is unexpectedly stunning, at once bold and intimate: she has a genius for infusing even large-scale action set pieces with the human element.” —Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
