Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: Insomnia (1997), directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg
For his first film after his impressive indie hit (and American theatrical debut) Memento, director Christopher Nolan adapted a Norwegian thriller about a murder investigation in a remote town north of the Arctic Circle (with the setting shifted to Alaska). The remake featured one of the better dramatic performances from comedian Robin Williams, starring opposite a strong Al Pacino, and critics found Nolan's directing especially effective even while abandoning the stylistic tricks that marked his previous film.
