30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: Enchanted April (1935), directed by Harry Beaumont
Elizabeth von Arnim's 1922 novel The Enchanted April has been adapted often for the stage, and twice for the big screen. The now hard-to-find and very short 1935 version takes a more slapstick approach to the story of four women on vacation in Italy, and draws more on a 1925 Broadway play adaptation than the novel. Mike Newell's Oscar-nominated 1992 version starring Miranda Richardson and Josie Lawrence is far more successful as well as more faithful to the book, going so far as to film in the exact location where von Amim wrote the novel.
