30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: The Jungle Book (1967), directed by Wolfgang Reitherman
Seemingly tired of turning theme park rides into movies, Disney now appears intent on adapting many of its animated hits into (semi-)live-action features. (Yes, there will even be a live-action Lady and the Tramp in the near future.) While last year's Beauty and the Beast is the most commercially successful example to date, the best-reviewed Disney remake is Jon Favreau's 2016 take on The Jungle Book. The film performed well enough that Disney is mooting a sequel, though Favreau will first busy himself with a live-action remake of The Lion King, due in 2019.
Actor-turned-director Andy Serkis is also working on a more serious live-action Jungle Book adaptation called Mowgli (due for release in October), though his film is based solely on Rudyard Kipling's book and not on the Disney cartoon.
