30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: ▣ The Beguiled (1971), directed by Don Siegel
The original 1971 adaptation of Thomas P. Culinan's Civil War-set novel A Painted Devil may be Clint Eastwood's least-known western. (At a minimum, it's certainly the least-seen of the five collaborations between the star and director Don Siegel, who also paired for Dirty Harry, among others.) French audiences seemed to like it though, much like they (and critics) also seemed to like Sofia Coppola's more formal (and definitely more feminist) 2017 remake, which earned her the best director award at Cannes that year. Coppola's version keeps most of the original film's ending but makes a number of changes, most notably in shifting the perspective from the male character to the female characters.
