It would seem an odd choice to attempt a remake of John Frankenheimer's brilliant and darkly comedic 1962 Cold War thriller based on Richard Condon's novel—a film both of its time and, suddenly, increasingly relevant again. But Jonathan Demme nearly pulled it off despite the Cold War being long over, with big business standing in for the Communist threat and Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber, and Meryl Streep stepping into the roles originated by Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, and Angela Lansbury.
