30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: King Kong (1933), directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack
One of the most iconic films in cinema history, the original King Kong also stands as one of the best-reviewed monster movies of all time. Sequels followed—including one that very same year—and the film has been remade a number of times, including in 1976 by John Guillermin (where Kong attacks the World Trade Center rather than the Empire State Building) and as recently as 2017 in the form of the box office hit Kong: Skull Island by Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
But the king of all Kong remakes—in the opinion of reviewers, at least—is Peter Jackson's 2005 version starring Naomi Watts and Jack Black. It was Jackson's first feature following his Lord of the Rings trilogy, and despite early worries about its box office performance, the film ultimately grossed over $550 million.
