30 Best Movie Remakes (and Reboots) of the Past 30 Years
Hollywood may be in love with remakes, but critics don't usually share those warm feelings. Nevertheless, revisiting an old property can sometimes prove fruitful, and not just commercially. In the gallery above, you'll find the best-reviewed remakes and franchise reboots of the past three decades, ranked by Metascore. (Note that a movie must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.)
Original: ▣ Hairspray (1988), directed by John Waters
One of maybe a dozen properties in film history to go from movie to stage musical back to movie, Adam Shankman's 2007 version of Hairspray is adapted from the 2002 Broadway musical, which in turn is adapted from the cult classic film by John Waters set in 1960s Baltimore.
The 2007 version mostly sticks to the story of the Broadway production (and obviously has more singing than Waters's original), but has a few plot differences from both of its predecessors. Nikki Blonsky takes the lead role of Tracy Turnblad (played by Ricki Lake in Waters's film), while John Travolta dons drag to portray her mom, Edna (played by Divine in the first film and Harvey Fierstein in the stage production).
