Sci-fi specialist Neill Blomkamp has yet to match the success of his Peter Jackson-produced 2009 debut, an out-of-nowhere, star-free hit that impressed with its intelligence, wit, and kinetic thrills. That film, in turn, has its origins in a 2006 short that plays with the same Johannesburg setting and extraterrestrial/apartheid themes and also stars Sharlto Copley.
