Original: True Grit (1969), directed by Henry Hathaway
Charles Portis' 1968 novel was originally adapted shortly after publication into a John Wayne western, which earned the star an Oscar. The Coen brothers' even better 2010 take on the story is a bit more faithful to the book, focusing less on the Rooster Cogburn character (now played by Jeff Bridges) and more on the young girl Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) at the center of Portis' novel.
