The Freshman 15: 2017's Best Debut Albums
While our final list of 2017's best albums won't arrive until later in our month, our best of 2017 coverage continues now with a look at the year's top newcomers.
Above is our list of the 15 best-reviewed debut albums of 2017, ranked by Metascore. Note that albums must have at least 7 reviews—and be a full LP, rather than an EP—to be eligible for inclusion. Albums are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding.
(#3) The young neo-soul singer's full-length debut finally arrived this summer after originally being expected as far back as 2014. It proved to be worth the wait, with CTRL collecting stellar reviews and landing on (or even topping) numerous year-end top 10 lists. SZA is the only artist on this list to receive a Grammy nomination for best new artist (with the album itself collecting another four Grammy nominations).
“Ctrl is a languid, cavernously soulful debut that is never anything but assured--a collection of delicious jams that are equal parts fragile, cozy and piercing.” —No Ripcord
