The 40 Best Albums of 2022
The gallery on this page contains Metacritic's list of the 40 best-reviewed albums of 2022, ranked by Metascore. This list only includes new albums receiving at least 7 reviews from professional critics.
Otherwise, all full-length studio albums (or mixtapes) released between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022 are eligible, though reissues, live albums, box sets and other compilations are excluded. (Those excluded titles are included in a separate list at the end of the gallery.) Albums are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding based on scores as of December 19, 2022.
(#7) The Brooklyn indie-folk outfit Florist returned with their fourth album in July, and it may be their best release yet. The previous release under the Florist name, 2019's Emily Alone, was basically a solo outing for frontwoman Emily Sprague, but this year's self-titled set found all four Florist members returning to the studio (or at least a house in upstate New York) to both write and record the new material.
“Florist’s latest project stands as the culmination of previous collaborative and solo work, featuring the band as a whole at their most minimally precise; and Sprague, in terms of songwriting, vocal performances, and composition, at her most versatile and visionary.” —Beats Per Minute
