The 40 Best Albums of 2022
The gallery on this page contains Metacritic's list of the 40 best-reviewed albums of 2022, ranked by Metascore. This list only includes new albums receiving at least 7 reviews from professional critics.
Otherwise, all full-length studio albums (or mixtapes) released between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022 are eligible, though reissues, live albums, box sets and other compilations are excluded. (Those excluded titles are included in a separate list at the end of the gallery.) Albums are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding based on scores as of December 19, 2022.
(#13) The middle release in a planned trilogy that began with 2019's brilliant Titanic Rising, And in the Darkness didn't score quite as highly, but that doesn't mean it's not another great album. The fifth album overall from Natalie Mering's Weyes Blood project features production from Foxygen's Jonathan Rado along with Mering herself, and musical contributions from Daniel Lopatin, Mary Lattimore, and Joey Waronker. Look for her on tour early next year.
“Magnificently composed, Weyes Blood reaches out to cast your loneliness away. Feeling like a timeless classic, this record is one that you can revisit whenever you want to hear the comforting sounds of another soul trying to figure it all out.” —The Line of Best Fit
