The 20 Best Albums of 2022 So Far
Which albums have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed LPs released between January 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022 by Metascore. Albums must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible, and resissues, EPs, live albums, and compilations are excluded.
After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums (Two Hands and U.F.O.F.) in 2019, Brooklyn indie rockers Big Thief made fans wait a bit longer to deliver album number five. But Dragon New Warm Mountain made up for the wait with quantity and quality: Not only is it a double album (with 20 tracks), it matches their career-high Metascore.
“Dragon is as heavy in its lyrical concerns as any previous Big Thief record, and more ambitious in its musical ideas than all of them. But it also sounds unburdened, animated by a newfound sense of childlike exploration and play.” —Pitchfork
