Which albums have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed LPs released between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019 by Metascore. Albums must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible, and resissues, EPs, live albums, and compilations are excluded.
After taking a five-year break from albums to pursue soundtrack and acting work (including appearances in The OA and the revived Twin Peaks), the singer-songwriter returned in January with her first new studio album since 2014's Are We There. And the John Congleton-produced set sounds almost nothing like its predecessor—or anything else Van Etten has recorded in the past.
