After making a splashy debut with the Metacritic Must-See District 9, Neill Blomkamp’s career hasn’t lived up to expectations: Each successive film (Elysium, Chappie, Demonic) has received a progressively worse Metascore. Now Blomkamp finds himself at the helm of a movie based on Sony’s Gran Turismo video game franchise, but this “adaptation” does take an original approach. Rather than a straight adapation (not that such a thing would be possible), the film is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who in 2011 parlayed a win at Nissan’s PlayStation GT Academy into a career in competitive driving. Archie Madekwe (See, Midsommar) stars as Mardenborough, and David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou are supporting players in the latest attempt to make a live-action box office hit (and maybe a franchise) from a video game property.
Note that Gran Turismo's original August 11 release date was just pushed back two weeks, though the film will still show in theaters the nights of August 11 and August 18 as a sneak preview.
