Recently at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Babak Jalali (Radio Dreams) took home the Best Director prize for this story about Donya (Afghan refugee Anaita Wali Zada), a former Afghan translator now living by herself in Fremont, California and working at a fortune cookie factory. When she’s promoted to writing fortunes, the life of this guarded but hopeful young woman takes some surprising turns. Shot in black and white by cinematographer Laura Valladao, Fremont has earned comparisons to the gently comedic films of Jim Jarmusch.
