A loose collective of similarly minded indie bands who shared an affinity for 1960s psychedelic pop, The Elephant 6 Recording Company rose to (relative) prominence throughout the 1990s following its origins in the mid-1980s when it was founded by a handful of high school friends—who would then go on to form the bands Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control. The collective would later grow to include such groups as Of Montreal, Beulah, The Apples in Stereo, The Minders, Elf Power, and more. Directed by newcomer Chad Stockfleth and produced by Lance Bangs—whose never-before-seen concert footage from the 1990s supplements new interviews with band members and celebrity fans including David Cross and Danger Mouse—this documentary was first released exclusively to videotape four years ago but has been updated for its inaugural theatrical run.
