In this relatively under-the-radar DC Comics film, Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña stars as recent college graduate Jaime Reyes, who returns home and finds himself in possession (thanks to Bruna Marquezine’s Jenny) of the Scarab. This ancient piece of alien biotechnology chooses Jaime, giving him a powerful suit of armor and making him Blue Beetle. Originally developed as a streaming property for HBO Max (before it was Max), this Angel Manuel Soto-directed (Charm City Kings) film will now get a theatrical release, and James Gunn has confirmed that Blue Beetle will continue as a character in the new DCU. With its more humorous, family-centered tone, and strong supporting cast of Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, and Melissa Escobedo, maybe this is the movie to break audiences out of their current live-action superhero fatigue.
