Season 1 debuts August 5 on Netflix
A film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's best-known work was in development for decades but never came to fruition. But fans of the DC Comics series will finally get to see The Sandman on screen in the form of this Netflix series developed by Gaiman alongside David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. Tom Sturridge stars as Morpheus, who attempts to restore his rule (in the present day, rather than the original story's 1980s setting) following a century of captivity, while Gwendoline Christie plays Lucifer and Vivienne Acheampong plays the librarian Lucienne, a gender-swapped take on the comics' Lucien. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Patton Oswalt, Mark Hamill, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson, Stephen Fry, and Jenna Coleman are just some of the other names in the sprawling cast. Ten episodes—which vary wildly in tone and genre from episode to episode, by design—will be available to binge on day one.
